Axles and bearings must fit perfectly for long life. When inspecting axle profiles, look for a grease shadow under the bearing journal.
The journal should be metal and not have a grease shadow. This grease shadow is a sign of a worn axle journal.
If your wheel has almost come off your trailer at any time, the axle has likely been damaged.
Damaged axles should always be replaced immediately.
