Coupling Caravan Trailer
Couplings on caravans and trailers perform the enormous task of pulling a variety of loads at highway speeds.
However, down under, a road trip isn’t really much of a ‘road’ trip. For the most part, you’ll be driving through dirt trails. You’ll also be driving through the rocky flatlands so your choice of coupling is critical.
If your caravan breaks down, there’s no one you can call for help. And if you can’t fix whatever’s broken, you’ll have nowhere to get spare trailer parts from. In the sweltering Australian heat, it’s going to take a lot more than just time to fix your flat tire or broken trailer coupling by yourself.
There’s a surprisingly easy workaround, though.

Some Handy Expert Information On Couplings

Box trailers and other small trailers used a star coupling for many years. Officials outlawed these after a string of serious issues. Occasionally, you’ll see one of these couplings surfaces when they need a replacement. These trailers now use the standard 2000kg snap coupling, which does not use brakes.
The override coupling is used to control mechanical as well as hydraulic brakes, despite being rated at 2000kg as well. The snap coupling does not have this ability.
The best-seller—and the true workhorse of couplings—is the 3500kg Electric Coupling. This is installed on almost every caravan in Australia, as it incorporates a park brake handle for electric brakes.
Caravans and trailers rated between 3.5t and 4.5t use a larger 70mm ball and coupling. Unlike the couplings we’ve talked about already, you’ll need approval from DOT Canberra before you use the 70mm couplings on the highway.
Trailers rated over 4.5t must use a combination of air over hydraulic braking systems. Furthermore, we have an ADR-approved 6t ring coupling, which suits trailers rated up to 6t.

‘Couplings’ specifically designed for use between towing vehicles and trailers over 3.5 tonnes ‘ATM’ when installed in the design configuration must withstand the relevant ‘D-value’, or the relevant ‘D-value’ and ‘V-value’ dynamic forces nominated in clause 126.96.36.199 or clause 188.8.131.52 when these forces are applied separately at the intended ‘Coupling’ centreline, without incurring any residual deformation that would interfere with or degrade the function of the assembly or any breaks, cracks or separation of components.
Over 3.5 tonnes ‘ATM’ – ‘D-value’ rated Dynamic Testing
Further, where the horizontal alternating force of minimum (kN) +/- 0.6 x ‘Coupling’ ‘D-value’ (kN) acting in a line parallel to the ground and in the longitudinal median plane of the towing vehicle for at least 2 million cycles. The frequency is not to exceed 35 Hz, and must be chosen so as not to coincide with any natural frequency of the system.
Over 3.5 tonnes ‘ATM’ – ‘D-value’ and ‘V-value’ rated Dynamic Testing
Finally, horizontal alternating force of minimum (kN) +/- 0.6 x ‘Coupling’ ‘D-value’ (kN) acting in a line parallel to the ground and in the longitudinal median plane of the towing vehicle and a vertical alternating force of minimum (kN) static vertical ‘Coupling’ load +/- (0.6 x ‘Coupling’ ‘V-value’ (kN)) acting vertically for at least 2 million cycles. The frequency is not to exceed 35 Hz, and must be chosen so as not to coincide with any natural frequency of the system.
