Some Handy Expert Information On Couplings

At Couplemate, we stock couplings for caravans, trailers, and off-road campers, as well as hitches for horse floats. The type of hitch you require for your caravan is completely dependent upon the load you are carrying.

Box trailers and other small trailers used a star coupling for many years. Officials outlawed these after a string of serious issues. Occasionally, you’ll see one of these hitches surfaces when they need a replacement. These trailers now use the standard 2000kg snap coupling, which does not use brakes.

The override coupling is used to control mechanical as well as hydraulic brakes, despite being rated at 2000kg as well. The snap hitch does not have this ability.

The best-seller—and the true workhorse of couplings—is the 3500kg Electric hitch. This is installed on almost every boat trailer and caravan in Australia, as it incorporates a park brake handle for electric brakes.

Boat Trailers and trailers rated between 3.5t and 4.5t use a larger 70mm ball hitch. Unlike the couplings we’ve talked about already, you’ll need approval from DOT Canberra before you use the 70mm hitch on the highway.

Furthermore, trailers rated over 4.5t must use a combination of air over hydraulic braking systems.

Finally, we have an ADR-approved 6t ring hitch, which suits trailers rated up to 6t.

Couplemate sells only the best quality marine couplings throughout Australia—covering the Northern Territory, Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland. We also ship products via Australia Post Air to New Zealand.
