U-Bolt Galvanised

U bolts (galvanised) provides a higher degree of strength; it has galvanised nylock nuts that are less prone to breakage than their conventional counterparts.

Towing a camper trailer across the Australian outback is an experience like no other. There’s no sign of habitation for miles and all you have to accompany you is the endless horizon, and the occasional boomers and brumbies.

We have written a good article on u-bolts and accidents here. Click Here.

The thrill of getting your 4×4 and caravan trailer off the road and driving in the outback is just the tip of the iceberg. There’s much to explore in the craggy, arid flat land. Camping out in the open under the starlit Aussie sky is something every trailer owner down under craves.

Why You Need A Spare Galvanised U-Bolt

But getting in and out of the outback is a real neckbreaker. There are no road signs, no people, no buildings, and it’s hotter than a shearer’s armpit. Once you get out there, you’re like the proverbial shag on a rock.

So if you’re out in the GAFA, and the u-bolt on your trailer gives up, there’s not much you can do about it if you’re not carrying spare caravan trailer parts with you. You could wait for someone to come and help you out. When and if that does happen, you’ll have to cross your fingers and hope that they have a spare u-bolt. And if they don’t, you’re back to square one.

Reconsidering your next trip into the outback?

Dont.

Just call Couplemate, and we’ll deliver all kinds of spare trailer parts, galvanised u-bolts, and trailer couplings anywhere in Australia.

Some Further Info On Our U-Bolts

A Galvanised U-bolt is de-stressed in an additional process—that happens after galvanising—to remove the stresses from manufacture. These U-bolts are then batch tested to destruction.

Why are your U bolts tested, you ask? The answer is that weak points are created when steel is bent. If this pressure is not removed, shock loading from bad roads can cause stress fractures and breakages.

The humble U-bolt on your caravan can cause you unbelievable grief. At Couplemate, we decided a long time ago to manufacture our own U-bolts when reputable products kept breaking.

A standard zinc square U-bolt broke due to a stress fracture on the bend. Immediately, we realised that Couplemate needed to make a better Caravan U bolt.

We designed a U bolt that had the thread rolled—as opposed to cut. Then, we made the length of the thread 60mm—instead of the standard 50mm—because we were always running out of thread when tightening the nuts.

Finally, we decided that galvanised nylock nuts were the better way to lock U bolts into position, rather than the two locking nuts which always seemed to rust.

Note: When replacing U bolts, make sure you also replace your old nylock nuts. These are a one-use-only nut.

1/2 inch U-bolts: breaking capacity is 17,000kg—we recommend use on axles rated up to 1500kg

5/8 inch U-bolts: breaking capacity is 23,000kg—we recommend use on axles rated up to 2500kg

ubolt Clamp kits are also available for 50mm, 56mm and 80mm clamping.
