Trailer manufacturers, repairers, and owners alike often opt for mechanical disc brakes because of the simplicity. Unlike electric brakes, mechanical discs don’t require any special equipment in your tow vehicle. Moreover, they provide safe braking, are easy to maintain, and spare parts are freely available.
Couplemate™ has put together this 6-Stud 2T disc conversion kit with 12-inch rotors to suit single-axle trailers.
Mechanical Disc Conversion Kit Contents
When you buy this kit, you’ll receive:
- 2 x 12-inch Plated Disc Rotors (6 x 139.7mm PCD M12 Studs)
- 12 x M12 Open Hex Wheel Nuts
- 2 x AL-KO Mechanical Brake Calipers
- 2 x Japanese 2.25T Bearing Kits (incl. tapered bearings, seals, and caps)
- 2 x Axle Hardware Refresh Kits (incl. split pins, washers, and castle nuts)
- 2 x Two-Hole Caliper Anchor Plates/Ears
- 4 x Caliper Mounting Bolt Kits (incl. bolt, flat washer, and shake-proof washer)
Brake Conversion Specifications
There are a 3 things to check before you go ahead.
#1 – Wheel Dimensions for 6S Landcruiser Disc
Your conversion kit will include plated disc rotors that were drilled and studded to the traditional 6-Stud Landcruiser stud pattern.
12-Inch 6S Disc Brake Specifications
- Stud Pattern = 6S Landcruiser
- Pitch Circle Diameter = 6 x 139.7mm
- Stud-Centre to Stud-Centre = 69.85mm
- Stud Thread = M12 x 1.5
- Min. Wheel Centre Bore = 105mm
#2 – Bearing Profile for Australia 2.25T
This conversion kit suits 2.25T bearings. Trailer bearing profiles are denoted by the laser-engraved bearing numbers on the tapered roller cone (see example image).
Couplemate 12″ Disc Rotors will suit the following bearings:
- Inner Bearing #: 30210J
- Outer Bearing #: 15123/245
This information is sometimes kept on file by the original trailer manufacturer. However, most customers resort to a “hands-on” approach. Please note: bearing capacity is 2.25T but the maximum mass legal to tow using mechanical disc brakes remains at 2000kgs.
#3 – Axle Profile for Mechanical Disc Conversion
By default, the 2.25T Mechanical Brake Kit includes a two-piece marine seal (#494013).
Measure from the tip of your axle to the back shoulder (i.e. the machined section).
If you have a machined section of around 180mm, you require a standard seal (#64607). In this case, let our team know if you place an order.
Moreover, 12-inch mechanical disc brakes require a threaded anchor plate that is welded to your axle. Anchor plates come included in the kit, and as such, we’ll need to clarify your:
- Axle Shape: Round or Square
- Axle Size: 45mm, 50mm, 60mm etc.
That way, we can supply the right parts for easy installation!
