10″ Electric Brake Maintenance Kit | Australian (AU) Style
All road vehicles require brakes that can safely and confidently handle Australia’s rough terrain. This includes trailers and caravans.
Couplemate™ specialises in trailers/caravans under the 4500kg ATM mark. In our experience, what makes 10-inch electric brakes great is in their simplicity, versatility, and brake efficiently.
Moreover, the replaceable parts within the 10-inch system make at-home repairs and maintenance easy.
What’s Included in the Maintenance Kit?
Each kit is enough to refresh brakes on one axle.
If you have a tandem or dual axle trailer, you may require two kits.
Easily Install and Optimise Your New 10-inch Brake Parts
The 10″ electric brake maintenance kit is simple to install at-home, as the magnets and shoe pairs suit both the left-hand and right-hand sides.
- Installing new brake shoes: The longer shoe (“primary”) faces the back of the trailer, and the short shoe (“secondary”) faces the front toward the tow vehicle.
- Installing new magnets: Magnets are supplied with a new spring and clip to hold it in position, and either magnet wire can be connected as positive or negative.
How to Optimise New Brakes
Brakes work through friction. For electric drum brakes, this friction is caused by the magnet and shoes contacting the surface of your brake drum.
New brake magnets will have a smooth, shiny finish. Likewise, your shoe pad surface will be neat and without scuffs.
Steve’s expert tip is to ensure you “bed” your brakes before your first trip. This means going for a test drive and burning in the brakes after you’ve installed the 10″ electric brake maintenance kit parts.
This stage scuffs the finish of your new parts to make them frictional. In other words, improving your brake efficiency.
10-inch Electric Drum Maintenance Troubleshooting
When should you replace brake magnets?
10-inch electric magnets have four “wear-indicator” holes on their brake face (see the image gallery). If you see fewer than four holes (or none at all), that’s an easy sign they need replacing.
Otherwise, replace your brake magnets if you see:
- Three or less indicator-holes,
- Wear on the inner metal housing,
- Exposed or otherwise worn magnet wire,
- Uneven surface wear*
* If you are experiencing uneven wear, check to ensure your backing plate assembly has been installed correctly (please call our team for assistance).
What if your current 10-inch electric brakes have issues?
It’s not a lie that many auto-repairers get trailer brakes wrong. Couplemate™ has a in-depth troubleshooting guide (The 101 Guide to Caravan Electric Brake Maintenance) which covers common electric brakes issues.
Given the scope and intricates of electric brakes, the simple solution may be to start fresh and replace the whole assembly.
Depending on the issues you’re experience, you can replace the:
- Right-hand side: 10-inch Australian Backing Plate (R)
- Left-hand side: 10-inch Australian Backing Plate (L)
- Both sides: Entire 10-inch Australian Backing Plate Brake Kit
