American Tow Balls
American Tow Balls are required to fit trailers imported from the USA. We stock trailer parts including 2″ and 2 5/16″ tow balls to suit 3.500kg US boat trailer couplings.
In our opinion, the Couplemate high tensile tow balls are the best on the market and an excellent investment.
USA tow balls can often be challenging to locate because they are not such a standard product in Australia. Couplemate carries good stocks of American towing equipment and can ship immediately upon your order reaching our desk.
Couplemate sells only tested tow balls for towing weights up to 10t.
Note: Standard Australian 50mm ball mounts are built to accommodate a 7/8″ shank whereas American tow balls have a 1″ or 1 1/4″ shank.

Shank and ball sizes as follows:
- 2″ ball has a 25mm diameter shank to suit a trailer hitch of the same diameter – 3500kg
- 2 5/16″ ball has a 32mm diameter shank to suit a trailer tow hitch of the same width hole – 3500kg
Please note: Standard Australian tow bar mount or receiver hitch mount have a 7/8″ diameter hole.
The best option for American trailers is to remove the US couplings and replace then with Australian equipment.
It is challenging to find American hubs, drums, bearings, seals and dust caps in the Australian market to replace equipment as it becomes faulty or for the same equipment to meet Australian Standards during registration.
