Pintle hook tow ball replacement for a 50mm combination pintle hook. Shank diameter can change depending on the type of pintle hook.
Couplemate Trailer Parts manufactures and tests tow balls listed below.
Measure the diameter of the pintle hook tow ball before buying a replacement.
Note: Not all pintle hook balls are the same. This model includes a 1/2″ nut to ensure there is enough thread to lock the tow ball into position.
Available replacement tow ball diameters are:
- 25mm – 52mm Shank – 45mm Thread Length – No Nut
- 28.4mm – 56mm Shank – 32mm Thread Length – 1/2 Nylock Nut
- 32mm – 75mm Shank – 60mm Thread Length (fine) – Nut 44mm across the flats
- 32mm – 62mm Shank – 48mm Thread Length (Coarse) – Nut 44mm across the flats

Pintle Hook balls are rated to 3500kg. Higher ratings to 4500kg pintle hooks are not available at this time. However, they may be available at some point in the future.
How to Break a Tow Ball
This is a good example of what can occur for trucks over 5t using 50mm Pintle Combinations.
Reversing a truck onto the ring coupling is not as easy as it seems. Trucks crashing into the ring coupling with the tow ball will cause the tow ball to break.
The tow ball is rated to 3.5t. Crashing into the ball causes shock loading in excess of 3.5t and more likely 8.5t or greater.
Tow balls do not break unless they are used at loadings in excess of the rating or incur shock loading.
