2.72-inch Dexter Dust Cap
The 2.72-inch Dexter dust cap is a compression fit. A compression fit means the lip of the dust cap is larger than the hole it fits; therefore, it must compress to lock into the hole.
What size Dexter Caps are available
- 1.98-inch Metal Cap (50mm)
- 2.441 inch Metal Cap (62mm)
- 2.75-inch Metal Cap. (39.85mm)
Some Dexter hubs do not have machined chamfers in the boss and rear of the hub.
Insertion can be brutal. Couplemate manufacturers a dust cap dolly to simplify dust cap insertion.
Dust cap can become lost if hammered into position too frequently, even on the first insert.
Once the dust cap is home, stop hitting it. Extra hits can make it loose-fitting.
Question: Should I fill my grease cap full of grease?
Answer: No, the purpose of the grease cap is to catch excess grease from the bearing cavity.
Generally, grease is oversupplied during the greasing process.
The grease will exit the bearing cavity at high speeds and during the initial heating and cooling. Note that grease never re-enters the bearing cavity, finding its way into the grease cap.
