Breakaway Systems

Breakaway Kits

The purpose of breakaway systems:

Breakaway systems are an emergency braking mechanism. If your trailer accidentally detaches from your towing vehicle, breakaway switches activate an independent battery system. This system engages your electric trailer brakes, bringing the trailer to a stop. In particular, when the trailer pin has been pulled, the battery activates; these brakes should be applied for a minimum of 15 minutes to correctly test.

If you drive on high-speed roads or regularly experience extreme driving conditions, breakaway systems apply an additional layer of safety to your towing experience.

How often should you check on your breakaway system:

Well-functioning brakes are critical to ensuring a safe driving experience.

Before any large trip, you should check that your breakaway system still functions and replace the battery if needed. Most breakaways have an LED display to assist in confirming if your battery is flat. You can, firstly, check your LED display.

If you do not have an LED display: pull your trailer pin out. Put your battery on it’s full voltage for 15 minutes. If your brakes do not turn on, your battery is likely flat.

Try charging your battery: if you cannot charge your battery, it needs to be replaced.
