Axle - Parts
Caravan and boat trailer axle systems consist of several main components: axle beams, hubs, bearings, seals, and spindles, and suspension components such as leaf springs or rubber inserts for torsion axles.
These parts are available individually or in complete kits from various online retailers and specialised suppliers.
Common Axle Parts & Components
- Axle Beam: The main structural tube (straight, drop, or gull wing design) that connects the wheels and supports the trailer’s weight.
- Hubs & Drums: The assembly onto which the wheel is mounted. Hubs come in idler (non-braked) or braked versions (drum or disc).
- Bearings & Seals: High-quality bearings and seals are crucial for smooth wheel rotation and preventing water or dirt ingress, especially important for boat trailers that are frequently submerged.
- Spindles: The part of the axle around which the hub and wheel assembly rotate. They can be replaced if damaged.
Suspension Components:
- Leaf Springs: A traditional suspension system used with spring axles to cushion the load.
- U-bolts & Hanger Kits: Hardware used to secure the axle and springs to the trailer frame.
- Torsion Axle Inserts: Rubber elements inside the axle tube that provide shock absorption in modern torsion axles.
- Shock Absorbers: Additional components used with some suspension systems to dampen movement.
- Brake Components: Essential for safety, these include brake assemblies (electric or hydraulic), calipers, pads, rotors, and brake lines.
- Miscellaneous Hardware: Includes flange nuts, lug nuts, dust caps, and grease (e.g., Bearing Buddies for boat trailers).
