Tipper Hinges
Truck tipper hinges and their associated parts, such as hinge bars, chassis brackets, body brackets, pins, and bushes, are available from various online suppliers and can be purchased as individual components or complete kits.
Common Tipper Hinge Parts
A complete tipper hinge assembly or kit typically includes several components that work together to ensure smooth, secure operation.
- Hinge Bars/Pins: These are solid metal rods (e.g., 25mm, 35mm, 40mm, 2 1/4″ diameter) that act as the central pivot point for the tipping body or tailgate. They are available in various lengths and materials like black steel or bright mild steel.
- Chassis Brackets: These are heavy-duty components that weld or bolt onto the truck’s chassis frame to provide a secure mounting point for the hinge bar.
- Body Brackets (Bosses): These parts attach to the dump body itself and interlock with the chassis brackets and hinge bar to form the pivot.
- Bushes/Collars: These small, but critical, components are inserted into the brackets to reduce friction and wear between the moving metal parts (pin and knuckle). They are often made of nylon or steel, and some are designed with a point for a grease nipple for easy lubrication.
- Catches/Latches (Tailgate Specific): For tailgates that can swing open (two-way tailgates), specific catches and latches (sometimes called “horse head” catches) are used to secure the gate when closed or allow it to swing.
- Safety Chains/Components: While not strictly part of the hinge itself, these safety components secure the tailgate or body during operation.
