Axle - Stub Axles
Stub axles are available in specific variants compatible with Dexter and AL-KO bearing systems, as well as those used in Aussie Swag and other independent suspension systems, and can be integrated into drop and overlay axle designs.
The specific dimensions and bearing profiles vary between manufacturers and applications.
Bearing Compatibility
Stub axles are machined with specific profiles to suit different bearing sets, which must match the hubs you intend to use.
- Dexter: Specific stub axles are designed to suit the Dexter 3.5K bearing group or 2-tonne Dexter bearings.
For example, a 45mm round stub axle for Dexter will use an inner bearing (Set 17: 68149/11) and an outer bearing (Set 4: 44649/10), as specified by The Trailer Shop. - AL-KO: AL-KO manufactures its own range of stub axle assemblies and independent rubber suspension (IRS) stub axles, which use specific AL-KO bearing profiles, such as those for 2-tonne or 3-tonne capacity.
A 50mm square stub axle turned for AL-KO 2-tonne bearings uses an inner bearing (30210) and an outer bearing (Set 43: 15123 cone & 15245 cup). - Aussie Swag: These stub axles are typically for independent trailing arm suspension systems and can be found with either 2-tonne or 3-tonne bearing profiles.
Axle Design Types
The mention of “drop” and “overlays” refers to the axle design configurations, which are typically achieved by inserting stub axles into a main structural beam.
- Drop Axles: These use welded “drop plates” to lower the stub axle below the main axle beam, significantly reducing the trailer’s ride height for easier access.
- Overlay Axles: Similar in principle, overlay axles also adjust the height by creating a gap between the stub centre and the beam centre, either lowering the trailer for stability or raising it for ground clearance.
