Couplings - Standard Ball
Trailer and Caravan Road Coupling Parts
Trailer couplings on caravans are designed to tow a wide range of loads safely at highway speeds, from light vehicles to trucks. The right coupling depends on the trailer’s total weight and, in some cases, the towing vehicle.
At Couplemate, we stock AL-KO coupling spares suitable for road caravans, horse floats, and off-road campers. Mechanical and hydraulic brakes are used to control 2-tonne override couplings, while the 3500 kg Electric Coupling is a popular and reliable choice across the industry.
Standard caravan and trailer towing equipment is rated to 3.5 t on a conventional tow ball. For heavier trailers, 4.5 t couplings use a 70 mm tow ball, which requires approval from DOT Canberra for highway use. Some setups are not suitable for a ball and coupling and instead require a pintle and ring connection.
Trailers over 4.5 t typically use heavy-duty braking systems, such as air-over-hydraulic configurations. For the heaviest loads, Couplemate offers an ADR-approved 6 t ring coupling, suitable for trailers up to 6 t.
