Note: Locktite must be applied when bearing buddies are inserted into hubs to help prevent them from becoming dislodged during transit or even stolen. Some hub bosses can vary by as much as 0.2mm.
This variation in some manufacturers’ hub sizes can cause a loose-fitting bearing buddy. We recommend a medium-strength locking compound on all bearing buddies.
Some hubs do not have machined chamfers in the boss and rear of the hub.
Insertion can be difficult. Using a pipe of the correct diameter can significantly improve the ease of installing the dust cap.
Dust cap can become loose if hammered into position too frequently, even on the first insert.
Once the dust cap is home, stop hitting it. An extra hit can make it loose-fitting.
Question: Should I fill my grease cap full of grease?
Answer: No. The grease cap aims to catch excess grease from the bearing cavity. Your grease cap should be inserted dry.
The grease exits the bearing cavity at high speeds and during initial heating and cooling. Once caught in the grease cap, it never re-enters the bearing cavity.
Finally, take care when loading grease through the grease nipple.
Did your bearing buddy fall off, or was it stolen?
