Axle - Hydraulic
For boat trailers with a Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) over 2000kg, hydraulic disc brakes are a legal requirement in Australia. Under the Australian Design Rules (ADR 38/05) and Vehicle Standards Bulletin 1 (VSB1).
Trailers in this weight class must have an effective braking system on all wheels of all axles.
Legal and Safety Requirements
- All-Wheel Braking: Trailers exceeding 2000kg GTM must have brakes on all wheels.
- Breakaway System: It is mandatory to have an automatic breakaway system that applies the trailer’s brakes for at least 15 minutes if it detaches from the tow vehicle.
- In-Cab Control: Brakes for trailers over 2000kg must be controllable by the driver from within the cabin. Standard “overrun” (surge) brakes alone are typically not permitted for trailers in this heavy category.
Why Hydraulic Disc Brakes are Preferred
- Superior Corrosion Resistance: Unlike electric drum brakes, which have internal electromagnets and complex parts that fail quickly in saltwater, hydraulic disc brakes have an open design that is easy to flush with fresh water.
- Consistent Stopping Power: Hydraulic systems distribute pressure evenly to all calipers in accordance with Pascal’s Law, ensuring balanced braking across tandem axles.
- Heat Dissipation: The open, often vented design of disc rotors prevents “brake fade” during long descents or heavy use.
- Low Maintenance: Disc brakes have fewer moving parts than drum brakes and are self-adjusting, reducing long-term ownership costs.
Recommended Products for Heavy Trailers
For boat trailers in the 2000kg to 4500kg range, specialised kits from manufacturers and retailers like Couplemate Products are common:
- 2000kg Galvanised Hydraulic Disc Axle: A complete 50mm square solid axle with stainless steel calipers and 12″ ventilated discs for maximum marine longevity.
- DIY 2800kg Hydraulic Disc Tandem Kit: Features specially machined stub axles and an AL-KO iQ7 actuator with a built-in breakaway unit.
- 2000kg Tandem Trailer Kits: Includes rocker roller springs and galvanised calipers with stainless steel pistons to withstand harsh marine environments.
