Hubs - Unbraked
Unbraked Lazy Hubs: Technical Overview
Unbraked (lazy) hubs are the core of a simple trailer axle. They allow wheels to rotate freely without a braking mechanism.
Choosing the right hub depends on your axle capacity and the bearing profile used by your spindle.🔩
Bearing Profiles & Capacities
- Standard (LM):Rating: Up to 750kg – 1,000kg per pair.Bearings: LM11949/10 (Inner) & LM12749/10 (Outer).Common Use: Small box trailers and jet ski trailers.
- Slimline (Ford):Rating: Up to 1,450kg – 1,500kg per pair.Bearings: L68149/11 (Inner) & LM12749/10 (Outer).Common Use: Single axle trailers and tandem setups.
- Parallel:Rating: Up to 1,600kg per pair.Bearings: L68149/11 (Both Inner & Outer).Benefit: Uses two large bearings for better load distribution.
- 2-Tonne:Rating: Up to 2,000kg per pair.Bearings: 30210J (Inner) & 29749 (Outer).Common Use: Heavy-duty plant trailers and large horse floats.
- 3-Tonne:Rating: Up to 3,000kg per pair.Bearings: Large 3t specific roller bearings.Common Use: Earthmoving equipment trailers and industrial builds.✨
Finish Options
Natural (Raw Cast): Best for dry-land trailers (garden waste, furniture).Cost-effective but prone to surface rust if exposed to salt.
Galvanised: Hot-dipped for maximum corrosion resistance.Essential for boat trailers and coastal environments.🛠️
Installation Basics: Prep: Pack bearings thoroughly with high-temperature marine grease.
Seating: Press the bearing cups into the hub using a driver tool.Assembly: Insert the inner bearing and rear grease seal.
Mounting: Slide the hub onto the spindle; add the outer bearing and washer.
Tension: Tighten the castle nut until the hub stops, then back off 1/8th of a turn.Secure: Insert a new split pin, then tap the dust cap.
