Electric Brake Controllers In-cab and Chassis Mounted Brake Controllers

Electric brake controllers must never have the main braking power supplied through the lighting circuit.

Solder all cables in the braking system.

However, a contactor should be used to provide power to lighting circuits. The contactor draws its supply from the vehicle’s battery.

Firstly, there are two types of electric brake controller

  • Proportional controllers stop the trailer the harder when you push on the brake harder on the pedal.
  • Pre-set non-proportional brake controllers according to the weight of the trailer.

Queensland and the NT currently allow non-proportional controllers.

Soldered Joints

Couplemate strongly recommends all electrical joints be soldered.

Over time, joints become corroded and, as a result, fail.

Unsoldered electrical joints that fail often cause a fire due to copper wires becoming annealed.

Finally, if you are lucky, the joints will open the circuit before causing a fire.

Therefore, you can see the importance of soldered connections.
