How do electric brakes work?
Electric caravan brakes are electromechanical. When energised, the magnet attaches to the drum’s inner face; the spinning drum face applies pressure to the magnet arm, which in turn expands the brake shoes.
Their brake magnet design is important, as caravan electric brake magnets cannot operate in reverse if wired incorrectly. This is because it doesn’t matter how you wire a magnet; the magnets do not have a set positive or negative wire. It’s the trailer that has a set positive and negative end.
To expand on this, let’s learn more about the design of an electric caravan brakes magnet.
Basically, a copper wire is wound around a bobbin several thousand times to generate the EMF (Electromotive Force) in a magnet. The two cables you see on an electric caravan brakes magnet are the start of the winding and the finish of the winding.
How to Install 10-Inch Electric Brake Shoes
When you take a closer look at your pair of brake shoes, you will notice that they are NOT identical.
- The shorter lining shoe faces the caravan’s front.
- The longer lining shoe faces the rear of the caravan and engages with the handbrake.
If your shoes are on the wrong way, you risk your drum getting red hot and your bearings losing grease.
When energised, the magnet will attach to the inside of the moving brake drum and remain connected during braking.
The attached magnet on the drum forces the brake’s shoes during a forward motion, causing deceleration.
Tip: If your electric magnet and shoes need replacing, check the other components, as well, which may also show signs of wear. Electric magnets need replacing when the wear holes are no longer visible.
A better solution is to buy an entire backing plate and bolt it onto the weld ring.
The supply cable to the rear tail light globes is only large enough to power 21w, which is 1.75A. The power supply required to power 4 electric brake magnets is 4 x 3.2A or 12.8 amps.
