The difference between Brands of brake shoes

The critical thing to look for when inspecting trailer and caravan shoes is the slot or hole in the top of the shoe.

Australian brake shoes are slotted at the top for the park brake assembly.

American brake shoes have a hole at the top of the shoes.

Installation Instructions

Install the larger shoe towards the back of the trailer and the smaller shoe towards the front of the caravan.

Please Note: One axle uses two pairs of 12-inch electric brake shoes.

Why is this?

The longer shoe is the primary brake shoe and faces the caravan’s rear.
The short shoe is called a secondary brake shoe and faces the front of the caravan.

How electric brakes work

When energised, the magnet attaches to the inside of the moving brake drum and stays connected during braking.

The magnet on the drum pushes the brake shoes during forward motion, causing deceleration.

Tip: If your electric magnet and shoes need replacing, check the other components, which may also show signs of wear. Replace electric magnets when the wear holes are no longer visible.
