The critical thing to look for when inspecting trailer and caravan shoes is the slot or hole in the top of the shoe.

Brake Shoe Installation
A common question is, “Which way do you put 10-inch brake shoes on?”
- The longer shoe is the primary brake shoe and faces the rear of the caravan.
- The short shoe is called a secondary brake shoe and faces the front of the caravan.
When energised, the magnet attaches to the inside of the moving brake drum and stays connected during braking.
The attached magnet on the drum forces the brake shoes during a forward motion, causing deceleration.
Tip: If you need to replace the electric magnet and shoes, check the other components as well, as they may also show signs of wear. Replace electric magnets when the wear holes are no longer visible.
