Safety Chain Connection Kits
Safety chain connection kits ensure a secure, compliant link between a trailer’s safety chains and the towing vehicle’s towbar, adhering to Australian Design Rules (ADR 62/02).
These kits must be appropriately rated to match or exceed the trailer’s
- Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM).
- Australian Towing Regulations
Australian regulations specify requirements based on the trailer’s ATM:
- Up to 2.5 tonnes ATM: At least one safety chain is required.
- Over 2.5 tonnes and up to 3.5 tonnes ATM: Two safety chains are required.
- Over 3.5 tonnes ATM: Two high-strength Grade T steel chains are required (welding is not permitted in this class).
Connection devices must have a breaking load limit at least 1.5 times the ATM of the trailer and comply with Australian Standard AS 2741-2002 for shackles or AS 3776 for hooks.
Recommended Connection Kits and Components
D-Shackles & Bow Shackles
These are a common, industry-recommended connection method, provided they are rated.
Couplemate Rated D-Shackle (1.0t WLL)
- Material: High-grade steel, clearly marked with WLL 1T, S grade (or 6), and manufacturer identification.
- Compliance: Meets AS 2741-2002 for lifting applications, and industry advice recommends using these rated versions for towing safety.
Note: Stainless steel shackles are generally unsuitable for towing due to low resistance to bending stresses.
Hammerlocks
Hammerlocks are robust, high-strength link connectors, often used as an alternative to shackles.
Hook Sets (CTA Approved)
These kits provide an easy-to-use, government-approved alternative that simplifies the hitching process.
- Features: Includes G80 hooks and connectors with a push coupler pin that requires no tools for connection, making hitching easier for those with back or hip pain.
- Compliance: Has Federal Component Type Approval (CTA), ensuring it is tested and compliant with AS3776-2015, AS4177.4, and ADR 62/02.
- Ratings: Available in various sizes: 6mm (up to 2t trailer ATM), 8mm (up to 4t trailer ATM), and 10mm (up to 6.4t trailer ATM).
