13mm Dee Shackle for Tow Bars | Maximum 8.0t ATM

All trailers in Australia, including caravans and campers, must be connected to the tow vehicle through a rated chain.

It’s common to use D-shackles as connectors between the safety chain and the tow bar. D-shackles are inexpensive, easy to attach and detach, and provide a secure connection, making them a convenient choice for trailer and caravan owners.

The size of the pin can be difficult for some to remove; in this case, the 10mm hook set may be a more convenient option.

Most customers use this rated D-Shackle for 4.5-ton (4.5t) ATM towing applications, as it’s simple, affordable, and gets the job done.

13mm Dee Shackle Specifications & Applications

It’s essential to select the correct size D-shackle for your trailer chain.

  • Proof Load: 29.5kN
  • Break Load: 88.3kN

13mm Dee Shackle: FAQs, Do’s & Don’ts

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the Working Load Limit (WLL) of this 13mm Dee Shackle? Generally, a rated 13mm (1/2 inch) Dee shackle has a WLL of approximately 2.0 tonnes, but always check the specific rating stamped on the shackle body before lifting.
  • Can this shackle be used for side-loading? No, Dee shackles are designed specifically for straight-line, in-line tension and should not be subjected to angular or side loads.
  • Is this shackle suitable for marine environments? If it is made from Grade 316 stainless steel, it is highly resistant to marine corrosion; galvanised steel options offer good rust resistance but are better suited for general industrial or towing use.
  • What does the 13mm measurement refer to? The 13mm measurement refers to the diameter of the shackle body (the “D” loop), not necessarily the pin diameter, which is often slightly larger.

The Do’s

  • DO inspect the shackle for visible cracks, deformations, nicks, or wear before every single use.
  • DO ensure the shackle pin is fully screwed into the bow and seated tightly against the shoulder.
  • DO match the shackle’s Working Load Limit (WLL) to the maximum weight of the load you intend to lift or pull.
  • DO use mousing wire or a cable tie through the pin hole if the shackle is being used in a permanent or vibrating application to prevent the pin from backing out.

The Don’ts

  • DON’T use a shackle if the pin is bent, has damaged threads, or is a non-matching replacement.
  • DON’T subject a Dee shackle to side loads, as this can twist the body and cause catastrophic failure under tension.
  • DON’T exceed the rated Working Load Limit (WLL) stamped on the shackle body.
  • DON’T weld or heat-treat the shackle, as this alters the chemical properties of the steel and drastically reduces its structural strength.
