Tailgate Ramp Spring | Loader Spring for Horse Floats & Ramps

Heavy-duty steel torsion springs designed to assist in safely lifting and lowering heavy tailgates, horse floats, and ramp loaders.

Available in 40kg to 100kg+ capacities to ensure smooth, controlled, and injury-free operation.

Product Description

Operating heavy ramps and tailgates shouldn’t be a safety hazard. This premium Tailgate Ramp Loader Spring is engineered to take the strain out of loading and unloading. Manufactured from high-quality steel, these torsion springs store and release rotational energy, making heavy lifting effortless. Whether you are building a new car trailer, upgrading a low loader with drop axles, or replacing an old horse float spring, these components provide crucial mechanical assistance to prevent back injuries and accidental drops.

Because every trailer layout is unique, these springs come in specific Left-Hand and Right-Hand configurations. Additionally, the spring holders are proudly laser-cut and machined locally right here in Brisbane, helping you support high-quality Australian manufacturing and Aussie families.

Please note: We do not provide installation advice because spring holders can be welded to the chassis in various ways. For your safety, we strongly recommend installation by an experienced professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the correct spring size?

Do not guess the weight of your tailgate. Buying the correct size requires a simple measurement:

  1. Place a weighing scale on the ground where the ramp lowers.
  2. Lower the ramp directly onto the scale. Use a small piece of wood between the ramp and the scale to prevent scratching or damage.
  3. Note down the weight reading.
  4. Select a spring size that is 10kg less than the scale weight.

What happens if I buy a spring that is too heavy?

Many buyers mistakenly buy the largest spring to ensure maximum lift. If the spring is too heavy, the tailgate will only lower halfway because the spring’s tension resists the ramp’s weight. Over-specifying your spring can also cause the tailgate to swing up violently and slam into the trailer, causing severe structural damage.

How do I tell a Left-Hand spring from a Right-Hand spring?

To determine the orientation you need, stand with the spring’s smaller tail end pointing away from your body. Look at which side the longer tail sits on. If the long tail sits on your right side, you require a right-hand tailgate ramp loader spring. If it sits on the left, you need a left-hand spring.

Can you help me install my spring?

We do not provide installation instructions or advice. Spring holders can be welded to the trailer chassis in several different configurations, depending on your layout. Because torsion springs store extreme mechanical energy, we strongly advise having them installed by an experienced professional installer.

⚙️ FAQ: Tailgate Horse Float Spring Maintenance & Safety

How do I safely maintain and operate my horse float tailgate ramp springs?

✅ DO’s:

  • Stand to the side: Always stand at the side of the tailgate ramp when raising or lowering it, keeping clear of the direct kicking or falling path.
  • Check tension regularly: Inspect spring tension frequently to ensure the tailgate doesn’t suddenly drop or slam shut.
  • Lubricate pivot points: Keep the spring coils and mounting brackets well-greased with high-quality lubricant to prevent binding and rusting.
  • Lift with your legs: Use proper lifting posture—keep your back straight and lift using your legs when operating heavy spring-assisted ramps.
  • Replace in pairs: If your float uses dual helper springs, replace both at the same time to maintain even, predictable lifting tension.

❌ DON’Ts:

  • Never stand directly behind: Do not position your body or feet directly behind or underneath the ramp while opening or unlatching.
  • Don’t ignore squeaks: Avoid operating the ramp if the springs exhibit loud popping, grinding, or excessive rusty squeaking.
  • Don’t over-tighten: Never over-tension the springs beyond the manufacturer’s spec, as this can snap the hardware or cause the ramp to fly up dangerously.
  • Never weld broken springs: Do not attempt to repair or weld a cracked or damaged high-tensile spring; always replace it entirely.
  • Keep toes clear: Never place your fingers or toes near the moving hinges or the bottom edge of the tailgate while lowering.
