This product requires a 5/8″ or 16mm hitch pin (sold separately) to secure it in place. Couplemate™ recommends the use of a high-tensile pin.
This product can safely be used upside down (inverted).
ADR-Compliant Tow Bar Adaptor
The Couplemate™ Tow Bar Adaptor is manufactured in accordance with and tested to AS4177 and ADR 62/02.

On 11/07/2023, an independent tester conducted strength testing on the Towbar-510 in accordance with the static testing requirements of ADR62/02. The supplied Towbar-510 demonstrated compliance with the performance requirements of ADR62/02 when tested in accordance with clause 13.3 for towbars over 3.5 tonnes ATM, up to 6.0 T ATM.
Loading Specifications
The Towbar-510 was subjected to a minimum loading of:
- 88.29kN longitudinal tension and compression
- 29.43kN transverse thrust; and
- 29.43kN vertical tension and compression.
Towbar-510 meets the performance requirements set out in clause 13.3 for a trailer ATM rating of 6,000kg (6T).
While the Towbar-510 meets the requirements of ADR62/02, there is currently no separate component type category for towing accessories. Therefore, there is no standard testing regime for towing accessories like Towbar-510. Towbar-510 has not received a CTA from the Department of Infrastructure for that reason.

What You SHOULD Do (Do’s)
- ✔ Check your capacities: Always verify that your vehicle’s towing capacity and the tow bar rating meet or exceed the 6-tonne limit before hitching up.
- ✔ Use correct hardware: Ensure you use high-tensile grade 8.8 bolts (or higher) and locknuts to secure the pintle hook to the adaptor plate.
- ✔ Inspect before every trip: Regularly check for hairline cracks, wear in the receiver hitch hole, and ensure the hitch pin is fully locked with a clip.
- ✔ Cross your safety chains: Always cross your trailer safety chains underneath the adaptor setup to prevent the tongue from dropping to the road if disconnected.
What You SHOULD NOT Do (Don’ts)
- ✘ Do not exceed 6,000kg: Never overload the adaptor beyond its maximum 6t rating, as this can cause catastrophic structural failure while driving.
- ✘ Do not modify or weld: Avoid drilling new holes, grinding, or welding the adaptor plate, as any modification compromises its engineered strength.
- ✘ Do not ignore off-road reduction: Standard towing capacities often drop by up to 50% when navigating severe off-road or corrugated terrain.
- ✘ Do not mix receiver sizes: Never use a standard 2-inch shank in a larger 2.5-inch or 3-inch receiver without the properly rated reducer sleeves.
