2t Marine Axle Collar | Suits 50mm and larger Axles

2t axle collar suits 50mm axles with 2t or 3t Al-ko standard or marine bearing sets.

The AL-KO 2t bearing kit seal is also installed onto a 65mm Round or 63mm Square axle. These axles have a seal profile greater than 60.3mm.

However, a 50mm square axle requires a bearing seal collar. Axle collars are not required on axles larger than 65mm.

Seal Specifications

  • ID – 50mm
  • OD – 60.3mm

Collar seals should always be a tight fit; however, it is a good idea to use Loctite to lock the marine collar in place.

The raised edge on the collar is to retain the Marine seal within the confines of the metal ring insert.

Lubrication

Apply grease to the seal journal before installation. Grease prevents the rubber from burning on the seal’s lips; as a result, better performance is assured. If installing a marine seal on this collar, inspect the seal lips for adequate grease coverage.

Further, marine seals should be liberally lubricated with grease before insertion into the metal outer ring.

How to Fit the Axle Collar

An interference-fit collar must be seated flush with absolute precision. Follow these sequential steps for installation:

  1. Clean and Inspect: Use a fine emery cloth to remove any rust, burrs, or scoring from the 50mm axle stub. Wipe the surface clean with a degreaser.
  2. Slide Components First: Ensure you have pre-installed your brake backing plates or relevant hub spacers onto the axle assembly before installing the collar, as it cannot easily be removed once seated.
  3. Heat the Collar (Thermal Method): Safely expand the collar’s inner diameter using a heat gun, small blowtorch, or induction heater. Heating it uniformly allows it to expand slightly for a smoother fit.
  4. Drive onto the Axle: Slide the hot collar onto the axle. Quickly use a dedicated 50mm ID heavy-walled driving pipe (longer than the stub length) and a heavy hammer to drift the collar firmly home into its final seat.
  5. Cool and Inspect: Allow the collar to cool completely on its own. Do not quench it with water, as this can embrittle the steel. Verify that there is zero gap between the collar shoulder and the designated axle seat.

Tips & Tricks for a Perfect Install

Installation Integrity

  • Never weld the collar: Avoid tack-welding the collar to the axle. Welding high-tensile axle steel creates severe heat-affected zones (HAZ), which can induce stress fractures and lead to catastrophic axle failure under load.
  • The Freeze-and-Heat Combo: For an easier slide fit, place the bare axle stub under an ice pack (or use freezing spray) while heating the collar. The combined contraction and expansion will make it slip into place with minimal force.
  • Protect the Bearing Surfaces: If using a driving pipe, ensure it contacts only the flat face of the collar. Never let your tools slip and scratch the finely machined 50mm bearing journal surface.
  • Check for Binding: Once the collar has cooled and you have installed your AL-KO inner bearing cone and hub, spin the hub by hand. The hub should spin smoothly without any binding, catching, or physical resistance.
