Why should I check and retighten U-bolts?

First, retighten the U-bolts about 200 km after installation, as the steel tends to stretch slightly under load.

U-bolts generally fail due to hydrogen embrittlement during bending and galvanising. At Couplemate, a new process removes hydrogen embrittlement, producing ST-class U-bolts.

We stress-tested these U-bolts during manufacturing and in batch testing until failure.

Destruction loads exceed 17,000kg for 1/2-inch galvanised U-bolts.

Our U-bolts are derated to 375kg each, or 1500kg per set of 4 U-bolts, sufficient for a single axle.

The max rating of 60mm Round axles is 3000kg with a U-bolt rating of 1500kg.

What are the internal dimensions? These U-bolts feature a 45mm inside width, designed for a flush, full-contact fit against 45mm square trailer axles or RHS/SHS hollow sections.
Are they suitable for marine use? Yes, the electro-galvanised.. f.inish offers excellent corrosion resistance, making them ideal for boat trailers and saltwater environments.
Why do they include Nyloc nuts? Nyloc nuts feature a nylon insert that resists vibration, preventing the hardware from backing off or loosening during transit.
What is the weight rating? When used in a standard set of 4 on a single axle, they provide a combined rated capacity of up to 1500kg (375kg per individual U-bolt).

Do measure carefully: Verify your axle profile from the inside of the legs before ordering to ensure a tight 45mm square fit.	Don’t use on round axles: Never mount square U-bolts to round trailer axles, as this creates dangerous gaps and localised stress points.
Do use flat washers: Always pair the U-bolts with the included flat washers against the fish plates for an even, secure bind.	Don’t reuse Nyloc nuts: Do not reuse old Nylocs if you disassemble the suspension, as the nylon locking mechanism wears down after one use.
Do routine checks: Re-tighten and check the torque on your Nyloc nuts every 300km of travel for optimal safety.	Don’t over-torque: Avoid using high-impact air guns that can strip the galvanised threads or crush the mounting plates.
