U-bolts are measured from the leg’s inside to the thread’s tip. The width of the u-bolt is always measured from the inside.

The Do’s

Do measure your material: Verify your square tube, drawbar, or chassis rail is exactly 100mm wide before installation.
Do check thread clearance: Ensure you have enough protruding thread length to accommodate your bracket thickness, washers, and nuts.
Do tighten evenly: Alternate between the two sides of the U-bolt while tightening to ensure even clamping pressure.
Do use a torque wrench: Tighten the nuts to the recommended torque specification for your bolt grade to avoid stripping threads.
Do apply anti-seize: Use a thread lubricant (especially on stainless steel variants) to prevent thread galling or seizing.
Do inspect regularly: Check the tightness of the nuts after your first trip, particularly when used on boat trailers or heavy-duty racks.

Don’t use on round bars: Never use a square U-bolt on round tubing, as it will concentrate stress and crush the pipe.
Don’t over-tighten: Avoid using high-powered impact wrenches, which can bend the cross-plate or stretch the U-bolt threads.
Don’t reuse deformed bolts: Never reinstall a U-bolt that has been bent, stressed, or shows visible thread damage.
Don’t mix metal types: Avoid pairing raw steel plates with galvanized or stainless bolts to prevent galvanic corrosion.
Don’t modify the bolt: Do not heat, bend, or drill into the U-bolt, as this drastically reduces its structural load rating.
