M18 Greaseable Shackle Bolt

M18 greaseable shackle bolt is the centre bolt used on rocker roller suspension arms. Worn bolts often require replacing the entire arm.

However, Couplemate now manufactures a replacement bush for rocker roller arms.

Measure from the tip of the thread to the underside of the hex head.

18mm Worn Rocker Roller Hangers

There is no fix for worn hangers other than replacement.

The knurl under the head of a greaseable shackle bolt has a particular purpose. The knurl locks into the shackle plate to help prevent the bolt from spinning during spring compression. Broken welds are a good sign that the bolts need replacement.

The knurl is welded onto the shackle plate on the outback trailer springs to stop the bolt from turning. With a rotating bolt in the shackle plate, wear significantly increases.

How to tighten suspension bolts.

Tighten the 18mm x 100mm greaseable shackle bolt until home.
Back off 1/4 turn.
You need a small space between your hanger and the rocker’s arm; otherwise, you will develop an annoying squeak.
This squeak is due to a lack of tolerance between the arm and the hanger leg.

Ensure your tandem-axle roller-rocker suspension runs smoothly and safely by following these critical installation and greasing guidelines.

✅ What You SHOULD Do (The Do’s)

Relieve suspension weight: Always use a jack to lift the trailer chassis slightly before greasing. This opens up the pressure zone inside the bush so grease flows smoothly.
Use the correct grease: Opt for high-quality, waterproof lithium or molybdenum disulphide grease to protect against heavy loads and moisture.
Lock the knurled shank: Make sure the knurled part under the head locks firmly into the shackle plate to prevent the bolt from spinning.
Check at 10,000km intervals: Inspect and grease the bolts every 10,000km for highway driving, or 5,000km if towing in dirty, dusty, or coastal marine environments.

❌ What You SHOULD NOT Do (The Don’ts)

Do not overtighten the Nyloc nut: Never crush the rocker arm assembly. Tighten the nut until firm, then back it off slightly so components articulate freely.
Do not force a blocked grease nipple: If grease won’t pump, do not apply excessive force. Replace the grease nipple immediately to avoid blowing out internal bushes.
Do not lubricate bolt threads: Keep the M18 threads dry, clean, and completely free from grease or anti-seize when tightening the nut.
Do not reuse worn nylon bushes: Always inspect the accompanying spring bushes. Running a premium M18 greaseable pin inside a flogged or cracked bush will ruin the bolt.
