60mm Caravan Tandem Shackle Kit suits all Caravan shackle springs

60mm standard tandem shackle kit suits all 60mm standard tandem spring kits used on Jayco caravans.

Inspect shackle hangers and pins for wear. Replace worn shackle pins or shackle plates.

The gold-coloured plating is called SA5 ElectroGal. This coating offers greater resistance to salt water and other corrosive environments.

The 60mm caravan tandem shackle kit contains

2 x 16mm high tensile shackle bolts
2 x 32mm shackle plates (63mm centres)
Note: bolt heads are welded into the shackle plate to prevent the knurl from turning in the plate.

Standard tandem caravan springs use 16mm bolts and 32mm-wide shackle plates at 63mm hole Centres.

To prevent bolt wear, weld the bolt head to the shackle plate. Welding prevents the bolt from spinning.

Bolt spinning causes premature wear and failure.

Correct placement of the front and back hangers depends on the spring length. For 700mm springs, the distance from the centre of the middle rocker arm to both the front and back hanger centres is 835mm.

Shackle bolts in a standard tandem suspension kit are non-greaseable due to the self-lubricating spring bushing.

How to tighten shackle bolts

Tighten the shackle bolt until home.
Back off 1/4 turn.
You need a small space between your shackle plates and spring; otherwise, you will develop an annoying squeak.
This squeak is due to insufficient tolerance between the shackle plates and the spring.

60mm Caravan Tandem Shackle Kit: Do’s and Don’ts

Ensure a smooth ride, correct suspension geometry, and prevent premature component failure on your dual-axle setup by following these critical suspension guidelines:

✔️ Do’s

Do measure your existing leaf spring width precisely to ensure they are 60mm wide, as mixing them up with 45mm or 50mm kits will cause dangerous lateral movement.
Do lubricate all greaseable shackle pins (grease nipples) thoroughly with high-pressure chassis grease immediately after installation and at every service interval.
Tighten the nyloc nuts until they are firm against the shackle plate, but leave enough clearance for the shackle plates to pivot freely without binding.
Do replace the nylon or bronze spring eye bushes at the same time you install new plates and bolts to maintain uniform suspension alignment.

❌ Don’ts

Don’t reuse old nyloc nuts or worn shackle pins, as the locking nylon insert degrades and metal-on-metal wear creates dangerous play in tandem setups.
Don’t overtighten the shackle bolts with an impact gun, as crushing the rocker arm or shackle plates restricts the natural walking motion of the tandem suspension.
Don’t mix up the installation orientation of the central rocker equaliser assembly; ensure it is balanced evenly between both axles before lowering the caravan.
Don’t weld or modify the high-tensile shackle bolts or plates, as heat changes the steel’s structural integrity and risks sudden road failure.
