63mm Australian Grommet Dust Cap (Pair)
Our 63mm Australian grommet dust caps suit the following Hubs and bearing sets;
- Parallel
- Two Tonne
Some hubs do not have machined chamfers in the boss and rear of the wheel hub. Insertion can be brutal. Using a pipe of the correct diameter greatly improves installation.
The dust cap can loosen if you hammer it into place too often, even on the first install. Once the dust cap is home, stop hitting it. The extra hit can make it loose-fitting.
Should I fill my grease cap to the brim with grease?
Answer: No. The grease cap is designed to capture excess grease from the bearing cavity. Insert your grease cap dry.
Grease is generally oversupplied during greasing. It will exit the bearing cavity at high speeds and during initial heating and cooling. Note that grease never re-enters the bearing cavity once it is caught in the grease cap.
What is the purpose of the grease cap?
- To catch grease?
- Or to prevent dust from entering?
But what exactly are grease caps used? Are they simply decorative accessories for your trailer, or do they serve a real purpose?
Although a shiny chrome grease cap can be a nice touch on a rather dull-looking trailer wheel, it serves a fundamental purpose. Grease caps are the small, round metal covers at the centre of the wheel hub. Sometimes, they’re called dust caps, but for clarity, we’ll call them grease caps from this point forward.
Finally, grease caps protect your wheel bearings from the dirt, dust, sand, water, salt and road grime that can (and will) destroy bearings. Without grease caps, your wheel bearings wouldn’t survive long out on the road.

63mm Australian Dust Cap & Rubber Grommet FAQ
Here are the quick facts and details you need to know about the 63mm Australian Dust Cap with Rubber Grommet for your trailer or caravan hubs.
Advantages
- Premium Protection: Keeps dust, dirt, water, and road grime out of your wheel bearings.
- Easy Maintenance: The integrated rubber grommet lets you lubricate quickly without removing the entire steel cap.
- Australian Standard Fit: Specifically machined to perfectly fit standard 63mm (2.5-inch) hub bores commonly used in Australia.
- Durable Construction: Built from heavy-duty zinc-plated steel to resist rust and corrosion on tough terrains.
Disadvantages
- Grommet Wear: The rubber plug can degrade over time from UV exposure or heat and may need periodic replacement.
- Specific Fit: Only fits precise 63mm hub bores; will not accommodate non-standard or metric-variant imports.
- Tight Installation: Requires a firm, even strike with a mallet to install properly, which can be tricky without the right tools.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- What is the purpose of the rubber grommet? It provides a removable access point, so you can quickly grease your bearings with a grease gun without removing the main metal cap.
- Will this fit my standard Australian trailer? Yes, if your hub has a standard 63mm (approx. 2.5″) opening, this cap is designed exactly for that specification.
- Are the rubber plugs sold separately if I lose one? Yes, replacement rubber grommets are commonly available if they become lost or worn out over time.
- How do I install the dust cap without damaging it? We recommend using a dust cap installation tool or a soft-faced mallet to tap it evenly into the hub bore.
