Vibration fatigue is common for 39mm round and 40mm square axles in wider lengths beyond 1800mm.

You can fix it with either a new axle or shock absorbers; it depends on whether you can dampen the vibration. Shock Absorbers will not dampen ALL axle vibration if the axle is over the weight limits.

In Australia, a standard solid 45mm square axle is typically rated between 1400kg and 1500kg for a single axle configuration when paired with Slimline (Ford) bearings. With Parallel bearings, some setups can achieve a heavy-duty rating of up to 1600kg.

What is the main difference between an Electric Axle and a Marine Axle?

The core structural beam (45mm solid steel) is identical, but the finish and brake configuration differ entirely depending on the application:

45mm Square Electric Axle: Typically supplied in natural steel or painted black with welded electric brake flanges. Designed for dry-land use (caravans, tradesman trailers, box trailers), it features 10-inch electric backing plates and drums. Never submerge electric brakes in water.
45mm Square Marine Axle: Fully hot-dip galvanised to resist rust and salt corrosion. They are either left bare (unbraked) or paired with marine-grade mechanical/hydraulic galvanised disc brakes. They utilise marine waterproof seals to keep water out of the wheel bearings.

What bearings do I need for a 45mm square axle?

99% of standard 45mm square axles in Australia use a Slimline (Ford style) bearing profile. The technical specifications for standard Slimline bearing kits are:

How do I measure a 45mm square axle for replacement?

When ordering a replacement 45mm axle, supplier measurements are critical. You must provide one of two metrics:

Hub Face to Hub Face: Measured from the flat metal mounting surface where the wheel stud bolts sit on one side, directly across to the other.
Tip to Tip: The absolute total length of the solid steel bar from the very end of the thread on one side to the end of the thread on the other.
