What is the difference between Ford and Holden bearings?
The outer Ford bearing has an ID of 22mm, whereas the Holden bearing has an ID of 19mm. The larger bearing size increases the maximum load capacity from 1000kg to 1450kg.
What do I need to know about Bearing Marine Seals?
- Marine seals are a tight fit on the axle journal.
- Some installers apply silicone to this journal to keep the rubber seal in place.
- Marine seals rotate within the stainless-steel retaining ring.
- Friction can generate heat up to 100 °C.
- You must liberally grease this seal around the outside ring of a marine seal. Insert the seal onto the axle, not into the hub.
- A dry or greaseless marine seal causes excess heat.
NSK trailer bearings are rated for towing capacity as follows
- 750kg – 39mm Round Axle (Holden Bearings)
- 1000kg – 40mm Square Axle (Holden Bearings)
- 1250kg – 40mm Square Axle (Composite Bearings)
- 1450kg – 45mm Round or Square Axle (Ford or Slimline Bearings)
- 1600kg – 45mm Round or Square Axle (Parallel Bearings)
- 2250kg – 50mm Square or 60mm Round Axles (2.25 t Bearings)

NSK Ford Slimline Bearing Kit: Installation DO’s & DON’Ts
To get the maximum service life out of your premium, Japanese-made NSK tapered roller bearings, follow these critical installation and maintenance guidelines.
✔️ What You SHOULD Do (The DO’s)
- Always Replace in Pairs: Replace both the bearing cone (rollers) and the cup (race) together; mixing new parts with old, worn cups causes rapid failure.
- Use Quality Marine Grease: Pack the bearings thoroughly with a high-temperature, water-resistant wheel bearing grease, especially on boat trailers.
- Verify Your Axle Size: Do measure your spindle with a digital caliper to ensure it is a true Ford Slimline size (35mm inner / 22mm outer journal).
- Seat the Cups Flush: Do use a proper bearing driver tool or brass drift to press the outer races completely flat into the hub assembly.
- Recheck After Towing: Reinspect your hub preload and tightness after your first 300 to 500 kilometers of highway travel.
❌ What You SHOULD NOT Do (The DON’Ts)
- Don’t Use a Steel Hammer Directly: Never strike the new NSK bearing cage or hardened rollers with a metal hammer, as it will chip or distort the metal.
- Don’t Mix Brands or Ratings: Avoid mixing an NSK Japanese bearing component with cheap unbranded parts; stick to uniform premium parts for consistent load capacity.
- Don’t Over-Tighten the Axle Nut: Never lock the hub tight with your spanner. Over-tightening crushes the tapered rollers, leading to overheating and highway seizures.
- Don’t Reuse Damaged Rubber Seals: Never reinstall a worn or torn rear grease seal on the spindle. Always install the fresh 44mm marine seal provided in the kit.
- Don’t Spin Bearings with Compressed Air: Never use dry air to spin an unlubricated bearing at high speeds during cleaning, as this can instantly score the rollers.
