Why Choose the Couplemate 3t Unbraked Axle?
When working in demanding agricultural and isolated mining environments, component failure is not an option. Couplemate manufactures one of the best unbraked axles on the Australian market by combining high-grade materials with expert, precision craftsmanship.
Every single 3t unbraked axle is factory pre-assembled in our Australian workshops. We clean, grease, and set the tolerances of the heavy-duty Japanese bearings by hand using high-temperature, high-performance grease before dispatch. This guarantees that your bearing clearances and hub seating are perfect right out of the box. Backed by Couplemate’s lifetime warranty against faulty craftsmanship, this structural kit provides ultimate peace of mind on the field.
How to Calculate Correct Axle Measurements
Before placing your custom order, follow these straightforward steps to map your requirements:
- Measure Wheel Offset: Find the exact distance between the hub face line and the outer edge of your tyre sidewall.
- Determine Clearance: Add 50mm to this offset metric (or specify your preferred spacing between the rubber tyre and trailer chassis frame).
- Calculate Track Width: Multiply that final number by 2 (for both sides of the trailer).
- Add Chassis Width: Combine that sum with your overall trailer chassis frame width to determine your required hub face-to-face distance.
Essential Measuring Guide Codes
- [P] Profile Spec: The size and profile layout of the axle bar (e.g., 50mm Square).
- [T] Tip-to-Tip: The absolute overall axle length measured from thread tip to thread tip.
- [F] Hub Face-to-Face: The precise measurement taken between the two flat hub surfaces where wheels bolt on.
- [A] Chassis Width: The total outside-to-outside dimension of your trailer frame.
- [C] Tyre Clearance: The distance allowed between the inside of the tyre and the trailer side.
- [B] Back Offset: The rear spacing profile calculation.
- [H] Tyre to Chassis: Clearance gap between the tyre edge and the main frame.
- [G] Axle Pad Centres: The distance measured between the center points of the welded spring pads.
Note: You will also need to verify your bearing profile. Remove an existing hub assembly and read the laser-engraved identification part numbers on both the inner and outer bearings.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can I legalise this 3t unbraked axle for highway use at full capacity?
No. Under Australian national trailing standards, trailers towed on public highways with an Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM) exceeding 750kg must be fitted with an efficient braking system operating on at least one axle. This unbraked axle is designed exclusively for off-road farm management, mining operations, or as an unbraked tag/lazy axle in multi-axle configurations where the primary axles handle braking.
Why are Japanese bearings included instead of standard commercial bearings?
Heavy-duty agricultural and mining tasks expose components to immense static loads, dust, mud, and water. Japanese bearings are precision-machined to much tighter tolerances and feature superior case hardening, ensuring they handle high loads of up to 3 tonnes without premature pitting or structural fatigue.
Are these 50mm square axles kept in stock for immediate delivery?
Because heavy-duty trailer tracks vary widely across different harvester machinery, farm chassis, and custom miner setups, these heavy-duty 3t axles are typically custom-machined and built-to-order. This ensures the hub face-to-face [F] measurement accurately aligns with your chassis tracking.
