45mm Round Unbraked Lazy Axle

A 45mm round unbraked lazy axle has a maximum capacity of 1450kg.

Axles over 14500kg require brakes.

Tandem axles under 2,000kg require brakes on one axle. Tandem trailers over 2t require electric brakes on all axles. For boat trailers over 2t, electrically activated hydraulic brakes are acceptable.

Axles and hubs are Australian-made by Couplemate and Galvanised in Brisbane; as a result, you are purchasing the best equipment money can buy.

Calculating The Correct Axle Measurements

Measure the offset wheel. The wheel offset is the distance between the inside of the hub and the outside of the rubber.
Add 50 mm to the offset. Alternatively, choose your distance between the rubber and the chassis.
Multiply by 2 for both sides. Add your chassis width to the above number.

You will also need to identify your bearing combination, which can be done by pulling off a hub and bearings and locating the number laser-engraved onto the bearing. You will require both the inner and the outer bearing numbers.

What are the essential installation and compliance rules?

DO ensure your total trailer Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM) does not exceed 750kg if this is the only axle on a single-axle trailer, as unbraked setups are legally limited to 750kg in Australia.
DO use this axle on a tandem setup under 2,000kg if it is paired with a braked axle, fulfilling the requirement to have brakes on at least one axle.
DO double-check your wheel bearing combinations and stud patterns (e.g., Ford, Holden, or LandCruiser) to guarantee compatibility with your existing trailer rims.
DON’T exceed a maximum physical axle beam capacity of 1,450kg, which is the mechanical limit for a standard solid 45mm round steel lazy axle assembly.
DON’T fit this unbraked axle as the sole axle on any trailer or caravan structure exceeding 750kg ATM, or you will breach transport regulations.
