Electric Backing Plate – 10-inch American Guide

Ensure a flawless installation and reliable electric braking response on your American-style trailer hubs by following these essential guidelines.

✔️ The Do’s

Check flange patterns: Confirm your axle flange matches the standard American 4-bolt mounting pattern before unboxing the plates.
Verify left and right: Check the sticker or stamping on the plate; the primary shoe (shorter lining) must always face the front of the trailer.
Run matching pairs: Replace both the left and right assemblies across the same axle simultaneously to maintain even, balanced braking.
Use electrical solder: Seal all magnet wire splices with waterproof heat-shrink tubing and solder to withstand heavy road spray.
Bed the magnets: Complete a series of initial, low-speed test stops to smoothly burnish the new magnet face against the drum surface.

❌ The Don’ts

Don’t daisy-chain magnets: Never wire the left and right backing-plate magnets in series; always connect them in parallel.
Don’t contaminate shoes: Avoid getting any grease, oil, or aerosol spray onto the raw shoe linings or the magnet faces.
Don’t skip the ground wire: Avoid grounding the circuit solely via the trailer frame; run a dedicated negative return wire to the tow vehicle connector.
Don’t overtighten mount studs: Avoid distorting the heavy metal backing plate by exceeding the manufacturer’s specified flange nut torque rating.
Don’t ignore weak springs: Never reuse stretched or corroded parking brake lever springs when doing a partial retrofit.
