What is the step-by-step process for fitting a new stainless steel piston?
A 316 stainless steel replacement piston helps protect your boat trailer brakes in harsh saltwater environments. Follow these essential installation steps:
- Clean the Caliper: Thoroughly clean the caliper housing and ensure the internal chamber is completely free of debris, rust, or old fluid residue.
- Inspect and Ready the Seals: Check the internal caliper seals. Because old seals easily stretch or degrade during cleaning, it is highly recommended to have a replacement seal kit ready to install.
- Lubricate the Chamber: Generously apply fresh hydraulic oil directly on and around the rubber seal seated inside the piston chamber.
- Lubricate the Piston: Coat the exterior walls of the new stainless steel piston with a premium silicone-based lubricant, such as Inox MX6 synthetic grease. Do not use petroleum-based grease, as it can ruin the rubber seals.
- Press-fit the Piston: Carefully push the piston perfectly straight into the caliper chamber. Take care not to pinch, twist, or score the rubber seal as the piston slides past it.
