Product Specifications
Couplemate™ manufactures Swing Away Hubs from K1040, a high-grade Australian steel. This is the same grade of steel used for stub axles in the 4WD Swing Away Rear Kits, ensuring a sturdy, high-quality product.
The clearance between the hub and stub is 0.02mm and requires greasing before insertion. It is also necessary to thoroughly clean the wheel or tyre carriers before welding and powder coating.
The Flangeless Hub is manufactured to suit the following bearing profiles:
The kits contain NSK-branded inner and outer bearing cones, our Australian-made dust caps, and seals.

Weight and Load Ratings
The loading rate depends on the length of the swing-away you intend to use. The longer the arm, the greater the load on the bearings.
Since this application does not require high-speed bearings, we decided to manufacture a more robust spare wheel carrier. Tapered roller bearings are commonly used on trailer and caravan axles and can handle a variety of awkward weights (such as spare wheels, jerry cans, trailer lifts, etc.).
Couplemate™ recommends a 45mm Slimline or 45mm Parallel model because the fulcrum effect on the rear bar adds load.
You may need to replace the 4WD swing-away spare wheel carrier if the wheel’s weight exceeds the bearing’s load limit. This can cause the assembly to collapse; if so, replace it with a non-bearing-type carrier.

Swingaway Spare Wheel Carrier: Do’s and Don’ts
Ensure the longevity of your carrier and the safety of your vehicle by following these essential guidelines:
✔️ Do’s
- Do check that the primary safety latch and locking pin are completely secured and clicked into place before driving.
- Do grease the pivot hinge bearings regularly to prevent rust, stiff movement, and premature wear from road grime.
- Do ensure the vehicle is parked on level ground before swinging the carrier open to prevent it from swinging out of control.
- Do verify your tyre size and wheel offset match the carrier’s weight capacity specifications.
❌ Don’ts
- Don’t overload the carrier arm by climbing on it or mounting accessories that exceed the maximum load rating.
- Don’t leave the carrier arm unlatched while open, as sudden gusts of wind can slam it shut or over-extend the hinge.
- Don’t slam the carrier shut against the vehicle chassis; guide it smoothly until the latch engages.
- Don’t obscure your registration plate or tail lights with the spare tyre unless you have installed an approved relocation bracket.
