3t Galvanised Hydraulic Disc-Braked Axle

3t galvanised hydraulic disc-braked axle kit utilises a 60mm round galvanised steel to form the basis of the boat trailer setup.

The 60mm Round hydraulic-braked axle kit is a robust choice, and in tandem it increases the rating to 4.5t.

Couplemate manufactures 3t disc rotors that can be assembled on 50mm square or 60mm round galvanised axles. We recommend choosing these larger disc rotors. to maximise the length of service in between maintenance periods.

Important: Axle pads locate and centre the trailer axle. Please advise the outside chassis width of your trailer. We can then weld axle pads into the correct position. This service is not included in the price because some customers do not require it.

Note: Upgrading 6t axles to 4.5t provides a more robust rig.

The Galvanised Axle Kit consists of the following:

Galvanised axle kits have almost zero chance of rusting.

Calculating the face-to-face measurement on your axle is essential to determine whether this is the right fit. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Measure the whole wheel offset, that distance between the inside of the hub and the rim and outside of the rubber
  2. Measure the distance between the chassis and rubber or add 25 mm
  3. Add the chassis width by multiplying the number by 2

Technical Specifications

  • Weight –  120 kg.
  • Dimensions – 200 x 30 x 30 cm.

Visit our website for other types of marine brake axle kits, including 45 mm square mechanical override disc brake axle kits, 45 mm square hydraulic disc brake axle kits, and even Land Cruiser hydraulic disc brake axle kits. At Couplemate, we also offer U-bolt kits, tow hitch, and caravan trailer locks, to name only a few.

Calculating The Correct Axle Measurements

  1. Measure the wheel offset. The wheel offset is the distance between the hub’s inside and the rubber’s outside.
  2. Add 50 mm to the offset. Alternatively, choose your own distance between the rubber and the chassis.
  3. Multiply by 2 for both sides. Add your chassis width to the above number.

Still unsure of what measurements to take? Check out this handy guide below:

[P] – Check material specifications. What size and profile is the axle (for example, 45 mm square)
[T] – Overall axle length (tip to tip)
[F] – Hub face-to-hub face measurement
[A] – Chassis width
[C] – Tyre clearance
[B] – Back offset
[H] – Tyre to chassis
[G] – Axle pad centres

Identifying Bearing Combinations

You will also need to identify your bearing combination by removing the hub and bearings and locating the number laser-engraved on the bearing. You will require both the inner and the outer bearing numbers.

Where To Identify Bearing Number. Look For The Laser Engraved Number On The Bearing.

Frequently Asked Questions: 3t Galvanised Hydraulic Axle

❓ What type of braking system is required to operate this 3,000kg (3t) axle legally?

In Australia, trailers over 2,000kg Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) require a driver-controlled braking system with a breakaway mechanism. For a 3t hydraulic disc axle, you must pair it with an Electric-over-Hydraulic (EOH) brake actuator inside the trailer and an in-cab electric brake controller in your tow vehicle.

❓ Is this axle suitable for saltwater boat trailers?

Yes, completely. The heavy-duty hot-dipped galvanised finish offers exceptional corrosion resistance, and hydraulic disc brake configurations are preferred for marine applications over electric drums because they rinse out easily and do not contain magnets or hidden springs that rapidly seize up in saltwater.

🛠️ Installation & Maintenance: The Do’s and Don’ts

✔️ DO ❌ DON’T

  • Mount bleeding valves up: Always locate the hydraulic brake caliper so the bleeder screw faces the absolute top of the axle to allow trapped air to escape completely during bleeding.
  • Flush after immersion: Always wash down the discs, calipers, and pads with clean fresh water immediately after submerging the axle in saltwater boat ramps.
  • Check fluid regularly: Maintain proper hydraulic fluid levels in your EOH actuator reservoir and inspect line connections for leaks.
  • Verify your bearing grease: Regularly inspect and pack the high-capacity marine bearings with quality water-resistant grease.
  • Don’t use mechanical override couplings: Do not attempt to run a 3t trailer on a simple mechanical surge/override setup; this is illegal in Australia for loads over 2,000kg.
  • Don’t weld near seals or pads: Never apply heat or weld near the pre-installed hub seals, brake lines, or caliper assemblies without protecting them with a wet cloth.
  • Don’t mix brake fluid types: Do not mix incompatible hydraulic fluids; check whether your specific EOH actuator specifies DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid.
  • Don’t store with a locked park brake: Avoid leaving the hydraulic park brake clamped down for long storage intervals to prevent pad binding.
