Park Brake Handle for Boat Trailers

The Park brake handle or lever for a boat trailer suits 50mm wide chassis rails.

This park brake handle is also an emergency parking brake.

The galvanised marine brake lever or hand brake is positioned over a drawbar to engage a cable connecting the brake callipers.

The override coupling activates the parking brake during braking, pulling the brake callipers.

Position the drawbar handle against the override bumper on the back of the brake assembly.
Mark the hole position to create a pin location and drill through the middle of your drawbar. Affix the marine brake handle with a suitable bolt.
Locate the pivot bolt in the middle of the chassis rail
Connect the park brake cable from the disc brake on the bottom arm to the galvanised marine brake handle.

Pull to full engagement: Pull the lever firmly upward until it locks securely into the highest possible tooth on the ratchet plate.
Apply marine-grade lubricant: Keep the moving pivot points, spring assemblies, and dual-cable adjusters well-lubricated with anti-rust marine grease.
Check cable tension: Regularly inspect your mechanical brake cables to confirm they are tight enough to engage the calipers when the handle is pulled.
Use wheel chocks: Always place heavy-duty wheel chocks behind the trailer tyres as a secondary safety measure when unhitched on a steep boat ramp.

Do not rely on it while driving: Ensure the park brake handle is fully released and the safety catch is clear before towing.
Do not let salt water sit: Never leave the trailer parked for extended periods with saltwater film drying on the mechanical components.
Do not force a seized handle: Never yank or hammer a seized brake lever; diagnose and replace corroded cables or frozen springs first.
Do not ignore frayed cables: Avoid using the handbrake if the underlying brake wires or link cables show signs of fraying, rust, or snapping.
Do not leave engaged long-term: Avoid leaving the handbrake firmly locked during long-term winter storage, as the brake pads can seize to the hubs or discs.
