60kN Truck Pintle Hook Combination
The truck pintle hook combination is a low-wear connection between the truck and the trailer. Couplemate’s patented 70mm combination allows users to tow trailers with 4.5t Couplings without changing towing attachments.
This pintle hook, also known as the “Mega Hook,” has been released by our R&D department after five years of development.
The Mega hook has undergone rigorous testing to produce a reliable pintle hook spring for the truck and trailer industry.
50mm Tow Ball vs 70mm Integral Ball
Q. What should I upgrade to a 70mm hook? It’s a common question we hear.
A working trailer is about payload and the ability of sufficient payload to complete the job.
Example: A cable trailer used by an energy authority to install cabling on the overhead supply network. These trailers utilise a ring coupling for payloads up to 6t.
The smaller trailer in the yard has 70mm couplings, but cannot be towed by the cable truck.
This Mega coupling allows stock vehicles to put a combination of ring couplings or 70mm ball couplings.
50mm Ball couplings pulled by a 5t truck and over are derated by 20% for road use. (Reduced rating on a 50mm ball is 2800kg), (No derating for trucks under 5t)
70mm Integral couplings are tow ball couplings due to the absence of a thread and are therefore not derated.

Note: 3.5t tow ball breakages are caused by backing the tow vehicle (tow bar) into the coupling. This action causes hairline fractures over a long period, eventually resulting in tow ball breakage. Tow balls tested to 8.5t without damage or deformation higher than 22mm comply with Australian Standards.
Driving habits should avoid the tow ball from hitting the coupling when reversing.
This heavy-duty, combination pintle hook prohibits damage to the tow ball when towing with a 75mm ring coupling.
Additionally, when disengaging the pintle hook, push the bar backward and slide the locking clip into the locking hole located on the pintle’s body. This will enable the bar to remain open without assistance, allowing the operator to wind the jockey wheel up independently.
Pintle hitch ratings are based on trailer and truck weights. Use the drop-down menu to find the exact D-value for your rig combination.
Testing
A 50mm tow ball undergoes a static load test of 85kN on the longitudinal axis and transverse axis.
The 70mm integral ball undergoes 2,000,000 cycles at full load.
The 70mm integral ball is not a tow ball but rather cast into the mound without thread and nut.
