9 Inch Mechanical Brake Shoes are fully compatible with standard mechanical drum brakes and backing plates. This premium brake shoe pair fits seamlessly on both the left and right sides of your backing plate, providing a complete overhaul for one drum (one wheel assembly).
Engineered for reliable stopping power, this set is suitable for all 9-inch mechanical drums except early legacy models, making it an ideal choice for Wesco setups and general trailer maintenance.
Important Installation & Maintenance Notes
- Handle with Care: Take precise care when inserting these brake shoes into position.
- Heat & Bearing Protection: Installed incorrectly, these shoes will generate excessive heat and cause severe bearing wear.
- Identify Black Grease: A worn bearing casting causes roller wear, leading to carbon black contamination in your grease. If you witness black grease, replace your bearings immediately to avoid hub failure.
- Troubleshooting Hot Brakes: If you have already replaced your trailer bearings with high-quality Japanese bearings and still experience hot brakes, inspect your brake shoes for misalignment or incorrect seating.
- Lever Orientation: When installing mechanical backing plates, ensure the parking brake lever is positioned at the bottom (6 o’clock position). Note: This configuration is the exact reverse for electric brake systems.
- Complete Backing Plate Replacement: Replacing the entire backing plate is sometimes advisable because underlying components wear out over time. Removing a few bolts to swap the whole assembly makes the job significantly easier, remains relatively inexpensive, and fixes hidden problems that are not readily apparent.
How to Replace 9 Inch Mechanical Brake Shoes
- Disassembly: Remove the wheel, then pull off the grease cap and split pin to safely remove the brake drum.
- Remove Shoes: Detach the worn brake shoes from the backing plate.
- Organise Hardware: Keep the return springs safely in a container, ready for re-insertion.
- Lubrication: Check that grease is present on the backing plate surface directly under the lever assembly at the bottom. Apply premium molybdenum grease as required.
- Mounting New Shoes: Insert the new mechanical shoes back into the backing plate with the springs tensioned between the shoes.
- Spring Placement: The longer spring must be assembled in the lower position, while the shorter spring must sit at the top. Remember that left-hand-side brakes are a mirror image of right-hand-side brakes.
- Final Reassembly: Fit the drum smoothly over the new brake shoes and reassemble your hub components in reverse order.
