9 inch Mechanical Brake Shoes
9 inch mechanical brake shoes are compatible with mechanical drum brakes and backing plates.
This brake shoe pair fits on the left and right sides of the backing plate. One pair suits one drum. It is suitable for all 9-inch mechanical drums except early models, including Wesco.
Take care when inserting these brake shoes.
Installed incorrectly, these shoes will generate excessive heat and cause bearing wear.
A worn bearing casting causes roller wear, which results in carbon black in the grease. If you witness black grease, replace your bearings immediately.
If you have replaced your bearing with Japanese bearings and still have hot brakes, inspect your brake shoes.
When installing mechanical backing plates, ensure the parking brake lever is at the bottom or in the 6 o’clock position. (Note: this is the reverse for electric brakes.)
Replacing the backing plate is sometimes advisable, as other components may wear.
Removing a few bolts and replacing the whole backing plate makes the job easier.
Furthermore, replacing all the backing plates is relatively inexpensive and may fix problems that are not readily apparent.
How to replace a 9 inch brake shoe
- Remove the wheel, then remove the grease cap and split pin, and remove the drum.
- Remove the worn brake shoes.
- Keep the springs in a container ready for re-insertion.
- Check that grease is on the backing plate under the lever assembly (at the bottom). Use molybdenum grease as required.
- Insert the new shoes into the backing plate with the springs between the brake shoes.
- The longer spring must be assembled in the lower position, and the shorter spring must be in the top. Note that left-hand side brakes are a mirror image of right-hand side brakes.
- Finally, the drum is fitted over the brake shoes and reassembled. The assembly order is shown below.
