Trailer Spring Bush – Polyurethane 60mm x 16mm
The self-lubricating trailer spring bush – polyurethane 60mm x 16mm – is possibly the best-fitting spring bush in Australia.
Couplemate bushes are a precision fit.
How do I measure my shackle bolt?
Measure from the tip of the thread to the underside of the hex head.
Do I choose Greaseable or non-greaseable shackle bolts?
The spring bush determines whether to use greaseable or non-greaseable shackle bolts.
If the spring bush is made of nylon or polyurethane, then a greaseable shackle bolt is not required and may even be detrimental, as it can increase wear and tear on the bolts.
When shackle bolts are inside steel bushings, such as outback springs or roller bushes, a greaseable bolt reduces friction and extends bolt life.
It can be challenging to find a good nylon bush. Couplemate now manufactures high-quality polyurethane leaf spring bushes to its precise specifications.
- It fits well both externally and internally.
- The material should not chatter or chip upon insertion.
- Shackle bolts should not be loose inside a nylon bush. Purchase new spare parts here.
- Your bush should fit tightly inside your spring.
45mm Polyurethane Spring Bushes are also available in the following sizes
Polyurethane bushes are popular because they are self-lubricating and hard-wearing. As a precautionary measure, replace shackle bolts when replacing bushes.
Vibration fatigue wears down bushes, shackle bolts, and shackle plates.
Check your shackle bolts for wear during your pre-trip inspections.
TIP: Replacing your old bush is easy. Place the new bush on top of the old bush and knock the new bush in with a hammer.
All of your bushes, bolts, and shackle plates are easy to replace, provided you have the right parts. These trailer parts can be challenging to locate; however, Couplemate now manufactures its spring bushes.
Sometimes, owners wish to insert steel bushes and switch to a greaseable shackle system. New hardened-steel bushes are available at our Couplemate retail store.
Finally, spring bushes, shackle bolts, and plates that fit 45mm-wide springs are all subject to vibration fatigue.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What are the exact dimensions of this bush? This polyurethane bush measures exactly 60mm in outer diameter/length and is designed to fit a 16mm shackle pin or bolt.
- Why choose poly bushes over standard rubber? Polyurethane offers superior resistance to abrasion, oils, and chemical degradation, resulting in a significantly longer lifespan and sharper handling.
- Does this kit include grease? Please check the specific package variation. We highly recommend using a high-quality silicone-based grease during installation to prevent squeaking.
- Will this fit my specific vehicle or trailer? This is a universal 60mm x 16mm component commonly used in leaf spring suspensions. Please measure your existing shackle eye and pin to guarantee compatibility before purchasing.
Installation Do’s & Don’ts
✅ DO
- Clean the housing: Remove all rust, debris, and old rubber remnants from the spring eye before inserting the new bush.
- Use the right lubricant: Apply a generous amount of non-petroleum, silicone-based grease to the inner bore and shackle pin.
- Verify measurements: Confirm your spring eye measures 60mm and your pin is 16mm to ensure a snug, proper press-fit.
❌ DON’T
- Don’t use petroleum grease: Avoid WD-40 or standard chassis grease, as petroleum products can break down polyurethane over time.
- Don’t force with sharp tools: Never use sharp screwdrivers or chisels to hammer the bush in, as this can gouge and damage the material.
- Don’t torque immediately: Do not fully tighten the shackle bolts while the vehicle is still raised on jacks; torque them only when the vehicle is resting on its wheels.
