AL-KO red IRS shock absorbers are only suitable for AL-KO 3600kg tandem IRS axle groups.
IRS shock absorbers operate in reverse to standard shock absorbers and are, therefore, ineffective for common beam axles.
How do you replace ALKO Red IRS Shock Absorbers?
- Two bolts secure the AL-KO blue shock absorber into position, and removing them is relatively straightforward. To test rebound, close a fully extended shock absorber. If your blue shock absorber closes efficiently, then it needs replacement.
- The tell-tale signs of a worn ALKO Red IRS Shock Absorber are the degree of stone chips. As mentioned before, these stone chips can puncture, indicating shock absorber wear.

Enhance your towing stability and safeguard trailer components from harsh road corrugations by following these precise engineering and installation rules.
- Verify your weight profile: Confirm that your trailer falls within the engineered weight range—Red Octagon dampers are optimized for single axles up to 1800kg or tandem configurations up to 3500kg.
- Orient the body correctly: Mount the shock absorber strictly with the colored (red) section at the top and the black cylinder at the bottom.
- Check the bracket alignment: Ensure the orientation arrows engraved on the swing-arm mounting brackets face forward on the trailer.
- Torque hardware to spec: Tighten both the upper chassis locknuts and the lower bracket mounting bolts to exactly 86 Nm using a calibrated torque wrench.
- Fit in pairs: Always replace your shock absorbers in matched pairs across the same axle to maintain even hydraulic damping resistance.
- Don’t expect a capacity boost: Never assume adding AL-KO shock absorbers increases your suspension’s maximum legally certified load-carrying limit.
- Don’t mix color codes: Avoid mixing Red dampers with Green (900kg) or Blue (1350kg) models on the same axle setup, as this disrupts track tracking stability.
- Don’t leave out original spacers: Never throw away or ignore the structural spacer bushes; any washers or hardware originally fitted must be reused during retrofitment.
- Don’t force unaligned components: Avoid hammering bolts into misaligned swing-arm holes; gently compress or extend the hydraulic piston to slide the bolts through cleanly.
- Don’t ignore dust cap leaks: Never overlook hydraulic fluid weeping from the top piston seal during routine maintenance; it signals internal damper failure.
