What You SHOULD Do (Dos)
- ✓ Keep the dust cap firmly sealed: Always push the rubber weather cap tightly over the keyhole to keep out fine road grime, mud, and corrosive saltwater.
- ✓ Lubricate the mechanism regularly: Apply a dry graphite powder or a silicone-based lock lubricant every few months to ensure the internal tumblers turn smoothly without binding.
- ✓ Verify the lock engagement: Give the lock head a firm physical pull after snapping it onto the pin shaft to double-check that the locking balls have fully clicked into the home position.
- ✓ Match your hitch receiver size: Ensure the pin diameter matches your tow bar receiver hole size (typically 5/8 inch or 16mm for standard heavy-duty square hitches) to stop excessive rattling.
What You SHOULD NOT Do (Don’ts)
- ✗ Do not use oil or WD-40 inside the lock cylinder: Avoid generic wet oils that attract road dust, which quickly turns into a thick paste that jams up the internal key springs.
- ✗ Do not leave the lock seizing in the receiver: Avoid leaving the pin lock inside the vehicle tow bar assembly permanently without removing and cleaning it occasionally, as it can road-weld itself over time.
- ✗ Do not force the key to turn: Never use pliers or heavy force if the key feels stuck; flush the barrel out with lock cleaner first to remove trapped grit.
- ✗ Do not tow without checking safety chain clearances: Don’t install the locking head in an orientation where it rubs, pinches, or blocks your trailer safety chain shackle attachment points.
