50mm Reversible Towbar Receiver Hitch Kits 3.5t

A towbar receiver hitch kit is a set of components that allow you to attach your trailer or caravan to your tow vehicle.

Couplemate™ heavy-duty trailer receivers are made of solid cast iron, improving connection strength between your trailer and tow vehicle.

Over time, cast steel products are superior to fabricated/welded products. Welded tow ball hitch mounts and hollow receivers can distort under off-road conditions and shock-loading events on the highway. When inverted, hollow hitches are more likely to deform.

Couplemate™ recommends that all off-road couplings use a solid cast receiver hitch. This includes:

Key Benefits

  • Stronger connection between your trailer and tow vehicle.
  • It can be safely inverted to obtain additional height.
  • Long-lasting product that will withstand harsh towing conditions.
  • Purchases directly support the Australian economy.

The Couplemate™ Trailer Receivers are one of the last trailer hitches on the market to be Australian-made. The receiver shanks are cast in Sydney, drilled and machined in our Brisbane warehouse.

What is a Tow Bar Receiver Hitch?

Your tow bar connects to your tow vehicle and to your trailer coupling, usually via a tow ball or tow pin.

Hitches are available in different towing capacities, so choosing the right one based on your requirements is crucial. Ensure your trailer weight does not exceed your towbar’s rated capacity (e.g., if your tow rating is 3.5t, your hitch rating must also be 3.5t).

For more information on the different kinds of trailer hitches, read our article: “Choosing the Right Hitch: Guide to Tow Ball Receivers.”

Frequently Asked Questions

❓ What is a reversible towbar hitch kit?

It is a versatile ball mount setup that can be inverted. You can mount it in either the Drop or Rise position to perfectly level your vehicle hitch with your trailer coupling.

❓ What hitch size does this kit fit into?

This kit features a standard 50mm x 50mm square shank. It fits most standard Class 4 heavy-duty towbars and receivers seamlessly.

❓ Can I use this for heavy-duty towing applications?

Yes, most high-quality 50mm reversible hitches are rated up to a 3500kg maximum towing capacity. Always verify your specific vehicle and towbar capacities first.

✅ The Do’s

  • Check load ratings: Match your trailer weight to the exact limits stamped directly onto the hitch bar.
  • Torque the towball: Securely tighten the 50mm towball nut using structural tools to prevent accidental loosening during transit.
  • Insert safety clips: Push the R-clip fully through the hitch pin hole to lock the assembly securely in place.
  • Lubricate regular wear points: Maintain a thin layer of grease on the towball surface to prevent noisy friction and binding.

❌ The Don’ts

  • Don’t exceed ATM rules: Never tow loads heavier than the component block’s rated aggregate trailer mass.
  • Don’t modify the shank: Never drill or weld onto the hitch, as doing so voids the warranty and violates compliance and safety standards.
  • Don’t leave hitch loose: Avoid excessive sway and rattle; apply an anti-rattle bolt mechanism if any play develops.
  • Don’t ignore wear signs: Discontinue use immediately if hairline cracks or structural bends develop along the shank body.
