70mm Tow Ball and Receiver Hitch Receiver | 4500kg

A tow bar receiver hitch kit is a set of components that allows you to attach your trailer or caravan to your tow vehicle.

Couplemate™ 70mm Tow Ball Tow Hitch Receivers are made from Solid Cast Iron in Sydney. Because of their robust material, Genuine Couplemate™ trailer hitches guarantee a strong connection between your trailer and tow vehicle.

Over time, cast steel products are superior to fabricated/welded products. Welded ball mounts and hollow receivers can distort under off-road conditions and during highway shock-loading events. When inverted, hollow hitches are more susceptible to deformation.

For added versatility, it can also be used with the Cruisemaster DO45 tow pin.

You can trust the quality and durability of our 70mm receiver hitches, which are expertly cast, machined, and tested right here in Australia.

Towing Disaster: 4.5t on a 3.5t Receiver70Mm Towbar Receiver

You can use a Tow Ball Reducer Bush to take a 4.5t receiver to a 3t receiver. However, you cannot go the opposite way.

The right image shows a well-known heavy-duty tow ball mount or tow bar tongue rated at 3.5t.

However, a welder has used an oxy-torch to enlarge the hole to 32mm to fit a 4.5 t tow ball.

70mm Tow Ball and Drop Tow Hitch Receiver Guide

Ensure safe, heavy-duty towing and comply with transport regulations by following these critical alignment and installation guidelines.

✔️ The Do’s

  • Match capacity ratings: Ensure your tow bar, safety chains, and vehicle tow rating match or exceed the heavy-duty capacity of the 70mm ball (typically rated up to 4.5T).
  • Torque the ball nut: Tighten the massive 70mm tow ball shank nut to the exact high-torque specification using a heavy-duty wrench or breaker bar.
  • Use a locking pin: Always secure the drop hitch receiver into the vehicle’s hitch main box using a rated hitch pin and a reliable R-clip or padlock.
  • Level the trailer: Adjust the drop or rise position of the hitch section so your dual-axle or heavy trailer sits perfectly level when hitched up.
  • Apply light lubrication: Smear a thin layer of high-pressure multi-purpose grease onto the 70mm ball surface to reduce friction wear inside the coupling.

❌ The Don’ts

  • Don’t mix ball sizes: Never attempt to couple a standard 50mm or 2-inch trailer coupling onto a 70mm tow ball; it will not fit or lock safely.
  • Don’t exceed drop ratings: Avoid using inverted drop hitches beyond their certified inverted weight limits, as leverage forces increase significantly.
  • Don’t modify or weld: Never drill extra pin holes, weld, or otherwise alter the structural steel drop shank plate, as this voids its ADR compliance.
  • Don’t leave hitch rattling: Avoid driving with a loose receiver shank; use an anti-rattle shim or clamping bolt to prevent premature wear on the hitch box.
  • Don’t ignore shank wear: Never tow if you notice flat spots, cracking, or severe necking on the 70mm ball sphere or mounting shank thread.
