70mm Tow Ball Tow Hitch Receiver | 4500kg

A tow bar receiver hitch kit is a set of components that allows you to attach your trailer or caravan to your tow vehicle.

Couplemate™ 70mm Tow Ball Tow Hitch Receivers are made from Solid Cast Iron. Because of their robust material, Genuine Couplemate™ trailer hitches guarantee a strong connection between your trailer and tow vehicle.

Over time, cast steel products are superior to fabricated/welded products. Welded ball mounts and hollow receivers can distort under off-road conditions and during highway shock-loading events. When inverted, hollow hitches are more susceptible to deformation.

For added versatility, it can also be used with the Cruisemaster DO45 tow pin.

How can I insert a 50mm tow ball?

Towing Disaster: 4.5t on a 3.5t Receiver

You can use a Tow Ball Reducer Bush to take a 4.5t receiver to a 3t receiver. However, you cannot go the opposite way.

The right image shows a well-known heavy-duty tow ball mount or tow bar tongue rated at 3.5t.

However, a welder has used an oxy torch to enlarge the hole size to 32mm to fit a 4.5t tow ball.

The 70mm physical drop sits closer to the ground, increasing the likelihood of scraping on steep driveways, boat ramps, or rough off-road tracks.
Increased Leverage Stress
The extended drop acts as a longer lever against your vehicle’s hitch receiver. Always verify your vehicle manufacturer’s maximum allowed hitch leverage/tongue weight limits.
Cumbersome Weight
Forged from solid high-tensile steel to hit heavy weight ratings, this unit is physically heavy and can be awkward to slip in and out of the receiver.
Fixed Height Restrictions
If you regularly tow multiple trailers of different heights, a fixed-drop hitch lacks the flexibility of an adjustable multi-drop system.

❓ Can this hitch be inverted to act as a rise?

While many drop shanks can be turned upside down to create a 70mm rise, you must explicitly check the product specifications. Some heavy-duty 70mm hitches are strict “Drop Only” rated due to the directional load forces on the gusset welding.
