U-Bolts and Kits
U-Bolt Galvanised Kits and Clamp Kits
Browse our engineering-grade catalogue of high-strength Galvanised U-Bolt Kits and Clamp Kits purposefully designed for caravan, boat, and utility trailer suspension systems. Engineered to combat road corrugations, our heavy-duty ElectroGal® assemblies feature robust rolled threads, advanced stress-relief processing, and protective galvanised nylock nuts. Secure your running gear with heavy-duty fasteners precision-manufactured to eliminate stress fractures and handle demanding shock loads.
Engineered for Harsh Road Corrugations
The humble galvanised U-bolt on your caravan can cause unbelievable grief. At Couplemate, we decided to manufacture our own line of high-performance hardware because standard commercial alternatives kept breaking under stress.
Years ago, a standard zinc square U-bolt broke due to a stress fracture right on the bend. We realised immediately that caravanners needed a more reliable solution. Weak points are naturally created when bending steel. If this residual manufacturing stress persists, sudden shock loading from bad, unsealed roads can trigger stress fractures and complete breakage.
- Rolled Threads: Our threads are extruded by dies rather than cut on a lathe or with a hand die. Rolled threads are significantly more robust because the steel grain flows in multiple directions following the fastener’s contour. Never re-cut the threads of a roll-threaded bolt.
- De-Stressed Steel: All Couplemate ElectroGal® U-bolts undergo an advanced post-galvanising thermal process to relieve internal residual stresses, then are batch-tested to destruction.
- Extended 60mm Threads: We increased thread lengths from the industry-standard 50mm up to 60mm. This extra length prevents running out of thread when fasteners are properly preloaded.
- Galvanised Nylock Nuts: Traditional double-locking nuts trap moisture and rust over time. Our kits feature high-tensile galvanised nylock nuts that are highly resistant to vibration loosening and environment-driven breakage.
Axle Shape Variations
To ensure perfect clamping pressure across the axle beam, choosing the correct shape profile is imperative:
- Round U-Bolts: Precision curved to match cylindrical axle profiles, commonly utilised on standard round boat trailers and unbraked utility configurations.
- Square U-Bolts: Drop-forged with crisp 90-degree internal bends designed to seat flush against square axle beams, predominantly used on heavy-duty caravans and tandem-axle configurations.
Engineering Load Ratings & Structural Capacities
Match your running gear carefully according to maximum axle load limitations:
| U-Bolt Specification | Ultimate Breaking Capacity | Recommended Max Axle Rating |
|---|---|---|
| ElectroGal® 1/2-Inch U-Bolts | 17,000 kg | Axles rated up to 1,500 kg |
| ElectroGal® 5/8-Inch U-Bolts | 23,000 kg | Axles rated up to 2,500 kg |
To prevent material fracture, over-stretching, or premature thread failure, always use a calibrated manual torque wrench. Do not apply final torque using an impact wrench, as high-speed friction causes immediate zinc galling.• 1/2-Inch (Grade 5/8 Equivalent) U-Bolts: Final cross-pattern torque must be set between 65 and 80 ft-lbs (88 and 108 Nm).
• 5/8-Inch Heavy-Duty U-Bolts: Final cross-pattern torque must be set between 100 and 120 ft-lbs (135 and 162 Nm).
Note: When replacing U-bolts, you must replace your old nylock nuts. These are strictly one-use-only fasteners. Always re-torque all fasteners after the first 100-250km of travel to account for initial mechanical settling.
