How to Measure U-bolts (example)

It would be best to retighten the U-bolts approximately 200 km after installation, as the steel tends to stretch slightly under load.

Furthermore, we stress-tested these u-bolts during manufacturing and in batch testing until failure.

Destruction loads exceed 17,000kg for 1/2-inch galvanised U-bolts.

Finally, our u-bolts are derated to 375kg each, 1500kg per set of 4, or enough u-bolts to suit a single axle.

The max axle rating is 750kg, with a bolt rating of 1500kg.

What You SHOULD Do (Do’s)

✔ Measure your axle correctly: Ensure your axle or pole has a 65mm outside diameter, as round U-bolts must fit snugly against the curved surface.
✔ Tighten in an X-pattern: Alternately torque the nuts progressively in an even sequence to ensure uniform clamping force across both legs.
✔ Re-torque after initial use: Check and re-tighten the nuts after the first 100km of towing, as the suspension components will settle.
✔ Use the right washers: Always install heavily galvanised flat washers and spring washers to prevent the nuts from backing off due to road vibration.

What You SHOULD NOT Do (Don’ts)

✘ Do not use an impact wrench for final torque: Avoid blasting the nuts with air tools, which can strip the hot-dip galvanised coating and damage the threads.
✘ Do not reuse old U-bolts: Never reinstall used U-bolts on suspension setups, as the steel permanently stretches when torqued for the first time.
✘ Do not force on square axles: Do not attempt to use round-profile U-bolts on a square 65mm axle, as it creates unsafe, uneven pressure points.
✘ Do not mix coatings: Avoid pairing galvanised U-bolts with raw steel or stainless steel nuts, which accelerates thread binding and galvanic corrosion.
